Patagonia is a journey to the remote with the added touch of  luxury. We will trek sections of the famous “W” in the Torres del Paine National Park while staying in an exceptional lodge perched on the Salto Chico waterfall. We will also explore the Sierra Baguales, the countryside & mountain range outside the park –  the land reserved for “adventurers with a pioneer’s spirit”.

Through 6 days of excursions by foot, boat, and bus, we will explore the highlights of Patagonia and the Torres del Paine National Park.

Day 1

Fly to Santiago, Chile

Leave Toronto in the evening.

Day 2

Arrive in Santiago and fly to Punta Arenas, Chile

Arrive in the evening and enjoy a welcome dinner. Tonight we stay in the hotel Cabo de Hornos, a landmark of this beautiful small town. Located in town opposite the main square, it provides good views of the well known and historical Magellan Strait.

Day 3

Hike to observe wildlife outside Puerto Bories and eco-spa

Today, we will observe the majestic Andean condors, among the world's largest birds and return in time to relax in the eco-spa. Tonight is spent in The Singular Hotel, set on 100 acres lining the Fjord of Last Hope. It is located just off the beaten path outside Puerto Natales in the Chilean town of Puerto Bories. The hotel is run by fourth generation family members of the original pioneers. It is described as “simple luxury laced with character and charisma”.

Day 4

Full day excursion

Depending on the weather, we will either navigate around the Patagonia Fjords and the Serrano and Balmaceda Glaciers or enjoy a full day trek to Cerro Tenerife or Cerro Benitez. Exploring the Patagonia fjords and the Serrano and Balmaceda Glaciers by boat offers up-close and unique views. Tonight, we will enjoy a wine tasting of Chilean and Argentinian wines.

Day 5

Day hike in the Sierra Baguales

An unforgettable drive through the countryside takes us to the remote wilderness where we will witness sheep, wild horses, fossils, and breathtaking views in the land made famous by none other than Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It is a full day excursion in one of the wildest, mystic and remote areas of the Utima Esperanza area called the Sierra Baguales: an impressive mountain range whose name was given by the locals for the wild horses that roam the land.

Day 6

Bus to Hotel Salto Chico in Torres del Paine National Park

A 2.5 hour bus ride will take us to the National Park and our Hotel. The Hotel Salto Chico is the only lodge in the center of the Torres del Paine National Park and is located on the banks of the Salto Chico waterfall. It offers excellent views of Paine Massif and two out of the three impressive torres (or towers), which give the park its name. A half day outing will be planned for the afternoon followed by a welcome dinner.

Day 7

Day hike to the Torres Del Paine Lookout (17km)

Torres del Paine National Park is recognized as one of the most spectacular and beautiful places on the earth. The park was created in 1959 and declared as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1978. We will spend a full day in the park walking through century old forests and past gorges until we reach the Torres campground, and climb a glacial moraine to the Towers vista point where we can enjoy a picnic lunch. The afternoon will take us back down to the Cerro Paine Ranch surrounded by views of multicolored lakes. Later, we can relax back at the hotel in the open-air jacuzzi.

Day 8

Full day hike to Glacier Francis (16km)

We will leave the hotel by boat to the Pehoe Refugio (weather dependent). From there, we begin our hike on undulating terrain with spectacular views of the two well known lakes of the Grand Paine Mountain and the Paine Horns. Eventually, we will cross a hanging bridge over the French River for a view of the French Glacier, enjoy a picnic lunch, and return.

Day 9

Hike to Glacier Grey (12km)

We will leave the hotel by boat (weather dependent) and walk from the Pehoe Refugio to the Grey Refugio with views of the Glacier, icebergs, the Southern Ice Field and the Paine Massif. After a picnic lunch close to the Glacier, we return by boat across Lake Grey. Tonight will be our farewell dinner.

Day 10

Punta Arenas and Magellanic Penguins

If time permits and weather cooperates, there is a chance we could take the five hour ferry tour to Isla Magdalena in the Strait of Magellan to see the thriving Magellanic penguin colonies. This is the best penguin sighting in the area but ferries depart at 5pm and return to Punta Arenas at 10:00 at night and are weather dependent. If penguin sighting is not to be, we will have a final celebration dinner and prepare for our long flight home in the morning. We will stay the night at the Hotel Cabo de Hornos.

Day 11

November is the ideal time to visit Patagonia, as it is in the middle of their summer. Temperatures range between 20°C to 26°C, however when we hike the temperatures in the glaciers and mountains drops significantly to below 10°C. As such, be prepared for weather from all four seasons. Detailed information will be provided upon joining this trip.
Since we are doing day hikes only, we will not need to carry heavy loaded packs. There are still long hiking days (up to 17km) which will require good cardiovascular endurance. Detailed information and a personalized fitness plan will be provided upon joining this trip.
We will stay in beautiful eco-lodges within the park and Patagonia, explained as "simple luxury laced with character and charisma". With open air jacuzzis, these retreats are a great place to relax after hiking the Patagonian Andes.
