“If you’re a skier who loves the backcountry, then the Wapta Traverse needs to be on your bucket list.”
Come ski the Wapta Traverse with Live Out Loud Adventures. The Wapta Traverse is a 5 day hut to hut backcountry ski adventure in one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world, the Canadian Rockies. It’s a 45km route across the Continental divide between Banff and Yoho National parks with big glaciers, excellent snow, lots of great powder descents and four alpine huts to link it all together.
We’ll pick you up at the Calgary airport and from there we’ll head to Lake Louise. Before we head out, we’ll spend a day trip at Bow summit (Banff National Park) testing out our touring gear and reviewing the safety protocols.
Led by Graeme White, a certified guide with the highest level of professional mountain certification (ACMG ski guide certification), we’ll follow the standard traverse beginning with a climb from the Icefields parkway to the Peyto Hut. From the Peyto Hut we’ll travel to the Bow Hut where we’ll spend a day getting in some powder turns on the “headwall” of the Bow glacier. After 2 nights at Bow Hut, we’ll ski to the Balfour Hut, a section considered by some to be the most spectacular of the Wapta traverse. Our final hut will be the Scott Duncan Hut, a stunning location with a phenomenal panorama. From here, the real fun begins as we begin a long descent down “swooping down snowy benches, through treed glades and along a canyon”.
We’ll end the trip in Lake Louise where we began, at an intimate casual mountain resort with cosy log cabins and plenty of celebration.

Participants need to be strong intermediate downhill skiers. Skiing is done with your backpack on and you must be able to ski in control and parallel turn in a variety of conditions. With huts no more than 10kms apart and daily elevation gains up to 2,000ft, you’ll need to be in good physical condition, able to carry a 40lb pack for several hours a day over several kilometers. “The skiing is not difficult but you should be able to ski powder and wind crust confidently on intermediate runs at the ski hill.” If you’re a good Ontario skier, you’re ready!
